Jewellery lasts longer when it is treated as something you wear, not something you store. A few habits make most of the difference.
Everyday habits
- Put it on last. After moisturiser, perfume, hairspray and sun cream — not before. Cosmetics are the most common cause of dulled finishes.
- Take it off first. Before swimming, showering, exercising, cleaning, gardening or sleeping.
- Keep it away from chlorine and household cleaners. Both are harsher on jewellery than most people expect.
- Avoid knocks. Remove rings and bracelets before lifting weights, moving furniture, or anything else that puts your hands under load.
Cleaning
- Wipe the piece with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth after wearing. This alone removes most of what builds up.
- If it needs more, use lukewarm water with a small amount of mild soap and a soft brush.
- Rinse thoroughly in clean water.
- Dry completely with a soft cloth before storing. Trapped moisture causes most problems.
Do not use abrasive cloths, scouring pads, bleach, or ultrasonic cleaners unless you have confirmed the piece is suitable for them.
Chains, necklaces and bracelets
- Fasten the clasp before storing. An open chain is far more likely to tangle.
- Lay chains flat rather than coiling them.
- Take necklaces off before sleeping — most chain damage happens overnight.
Earrings
- Wipe posts and fastenings clean after wearing.
- Keep pairs together so you do not lose one.
- Check fastenings occasionally and stop wearing anything that feels loose.
Storing
- Store pieces separately so they cannot rub against one another. Harder pieces will scratch softer ones.
- Keep jewellery somewhere dry and out of direct sunlight.
- A soft pouch or a lined box is better than an open dish.
- If you are not wearing something for a long period, keep it away from damp. Bathrooms are the worst place for it.
Care for your specific piece
Where a piece needs particular care, it is noted on that product's page under Jewellery care.
